I strongly believe the BWYQ Diploma in Teaching Yoga is the most thorough and considerate teacher training course available, as it ensures that every student teacher is equipped with the knowledge, experience, confidence and close support to become the best teacher possible. The BWYQ Level 4 Diploma inTeaching Yoga qualification is registered on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which means it is benchmarked to national educational standards. The BWYQ Diploma in Teaching Yoga is equivalent to the first year of a degree course. This is the highest level of Yoga teacher training currently available in the UK and is recognised throughout the UK education system, by schools, colleges, universities and employers.

Am I ready to become a Yoga teacher?

One of the first things to consider in your decision is am I ready to become a Yoga teacher? You do not need to be an expert in all fields of Yoga, but you do need to have sufficient experience, and most of all a passion to learn more about this magical practice of Yoga and how to share this with others. The BWY suggests at least 2 years’ experience of a regular practice, and it will be my preference (not compulsory) that you will have completed the BWY Foundation Course 1.

How is the course structured?

A further element to consider is how is the course structured? I have chosen to offer my course over a 3-year period, meeting one Sunday each month. It is possible to undertake teacher training courses over a shorter period of time, but I believe it is essential that time and space is given to student teachers to assimilate the knowledge and skills needed to become a safe, confident and effective Yoga teacher. The breadth of topics that we cover on the Diploma Course is wide and varied, time is needed not only to gather knowledge but also gain experience in these topics, so that they can be shared with confidence and authenticity. Once registered on the Diploma Course you may choose to begin teaching when you feel ready (in agreement with the course tutor). It is expected that you will be teaching regular classes in your community whilst undertaking this course (only once you feel ready). This will offer you the crucial support, guidance and continued learning when it is needed; as you are establishing yourself as a Yoga teacher. Once teaching in your community you will also be in a position to earn money through your teaching to help pay for the course. The whole ethos of this course is to provide the most effective learning structure to produce the best equipped teachers.

What is the course content?

It is important that your teacher training course covers the key elements in enabling you to become an effective and confident teacher. The BWYQ Diploma in Teaching Yoga Course is a 500-hour course and its content will ensure that you have sufficient knowledge of anatomy and physiology to make sure that your teaching is informed and safe. The effective teaching of asana, along with how you plan and deliver inclusive and progressive classes, will ensure you are confident in teaching all levels of practitioners. Principles and practice of teaching breathing, Pranayama and relaxation techniques, along with how to lead a meditation, together with sharing the principles of mudra, bandha, and kriya, will ensure you are well equipped to teach all elements of Yoga. The historical background of Yoga, and the study of some central traditional texts will lead you to being able to integrate these key concepts into your teaching, honouring the roots of Yoga in your practice and teaching. With a course syllabus ranging from the legal and professional aspects of teaching Yoga to the nature of prana and the panic system, this course aims to offer first-class training in all the practical, theoretical and ethical aspects of being a skilled and highly-qualified Yoga teacher.
