BWY Foundation Course Training

Ever since I completed this course myself in 2006 I had a dream that one day I too would offer this course. I feel so blessed that I was able to go on to train to be a Foundation Course Tutor with BWY and have offered Foundation Course 1 every year since 2017. Foundation Course continues to be one of my favourite things to offer, as it is a course that facilitates the wonderful exploration of all things yoga. If you currently love yoga but want to learn more, this course creates the perfect opportunity for you to develop your personal practice and your understanding of yoga, providing the opportunity for you to dig deeper then you ever would in a class, workshop or even retreat. When I undertook this course myself, I found it to be a liberating experience for me and my yoga practice and was a real ‘life changer’ in how I experienced yoga in my everyday life.

Who is this course for?

The Foundation Course 1 is run by The British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) nationally (in England, Scotland and Wales) and is suitable for anyone who wishes to develop their personal practice of yoga and widen their experience. It provides a comprehensive grounding in basic practical techniques taught in the context of the philosophy that underpins yoga. It is an ideal preparation for those who may wish to train as yoga teachers in the future but equally suitable for yoga students who do not wish to teach. If you have an interest to expand your understanding and personal practice of yoga then this course will take you on this journey. As Foundation Course digs deeper into yoga than any class or workshop it is aimed at those with a good grounding in yoga (the usual suggestion is to have attended classes regularly for 2 years).

How long is the course?

This course is delivered over 10 months, with a total of 60 teaching hours. We meet for one full day each month over this period. 80% attendance (8 course dates) is required to receive your qualification. Each course date will run between 9.30am and 4.30pm, with time for lunch and relevant breaks. The course venue is Lindley Library (HD3 3JP), a peaceful location in Huddersfield (close to junction 24 off the M62).

The Course Content

The core syllabus to be covered in the Foundation Course includes the preparation and practice of a range of yoga asanas (postures), a range of breathing and pranayama techniques, an understanding of the relevance of relaxation along with various relaxation practices, concentration and meditation techniques, an understanding and practice of mudra (sealing gestures), and chanting. The course will also include teachings, talks and discussions on the context and meaning of yoga, covering the history of yoga, the different paths of yoga, the eight limbs of yoga, and the use of Sanskrit language. My foundation course will also include practice, talks and discussions on prana and the pranic body, chakras and nadis, the mechanics of breathing, mindfulness, and developing a home practice. Students will be required to practice regularly throughout the course and will be encouraged to maintain a journal to reflect upon and make notes on their personal journey. Other than this there is no written homework and the course is not formally assessed. Each course session will involve a mixture of mat based practice, group talks and discussion and points for reflection.
